Digging up Jane Austen (32)

Digging up Jane Austen

1
To begin with human thinking
Is to stare down a dark drain
In the shadow of corruption
In some previous domain
Beginning with a flower
That blossoms on a tree
Smelling much like power
That is far from being free

I’m digging up Jane Austen
Hoping she will lead the way
With the ethics in her novels
We need desperately today

2
Since the day of our corruption
That took place centuries ago
Our gift for rational thinking
Equals that of a scare crow
Forget about our theories
Sailing with so much pride
And consider for a moment
What an iceberg may divide

I’m digging up Jane Austen
Hoping she will lead the way
With the ethics in her novels
We need desperately today

3
There is always tradition
And religion that is sound
Having been around for ages
And to peace and love is bound
Compared to evolution
That is clearly all around
By keeping thinking simple
We remain on safer ground

I’m digging up Jane Austen
Hoping she will lead the way
With the ethics in her novels
We need desperately today

4
So what about our values
And our ethics from the past
I suggest we ask Jane Austen
If we can wake her at last
She really is the expert
And the leader in this field
Divorced from liberal thinking
That has nothing good to yield

I’m digging up Jane Austen
Hoping she will lead the way
With the ethics in her novels
We need desperately today

The End
