Dragon Spotting (84)

1
People ask me about dragons
Are they really bold and brave?
Are they monsters in the making
That don’t know how to behave?

Do their mouths fill up with fire?
Do their teeth glow red and white?
Do they threaten to destroy you
In the middle of the night?

Peace and love are truly awesome
But they have had their day for sure
Now the people of most nations
Serve the true masters of war

Has justice abdicated?
This being the price we are prepared to pay
To prevent the dragon from knocking on our door
Since its common knowledge power controls the law

2
This describes dragons exactly
Please don’t ignore what I say
To become a dragon hunter
Is most ill-advised today

Since most end up in the grave yard
Contemplating what went wrong
When confronting a live dragon
That is mighty fierce and strong

Soldiers murdered Che Guevara
I believe it was a firing squad
On the orders of the dragon
Acting more like it was God

Confronted by such power
The others fled in awe
Realising the dragon
Commands the true masters of war

3
Gerald Bull took several bullets
And Gaddafi a sharpened knife
When you have the fire power
It’s all too easy to cheapen life

Justice flees from the battle
Seeking a good place to hide
And the vacuum thus created
Is where hate chooses to reside

Peace and love are truly awesome
But they have had their day for sure
Now the people of most nations
Serve the true masters of war

Has justice abdicated?
This being the price we are prepared to pay
To prevent the dragon from knocking on our door
Since its common knowledge power controls the law

4
So are dragons brutal killers?
Yes they really are my friend
Since they have the fire power
And the big money to spend

Developing brand new weapons
Even more deadly than the last
In the knowledge that true justice
Now belongs in the distance past

Soldiers murdered Che Guevara
I believe it was a firing squad
On the orders of the dragon
Acting more like it was God

Confronted by such power
The others fled in awe
Realising the dragon
Commands the true masters of war

Peace and love are truly awesome
But they have had their day for sure
Now the people of most nations
Serve the true masters of war

Has justice abdicated?
This being the price we are prepared to pay
To prevent the dragon from knocking on our door
Since its common knowledge power controls the law

In the Absence of Design (81)

In the Absence of Design (81)

1
Thanks to brutal competition
Central planning takes a hit
After which market forces
Screw us down bit by bit

According to the theory
How about we just retreat
Since the robots soon arriving
Are plain impossible to beat

2
In pursuit of full employment
Trash the planet and consume
And don’t think about the robots
Spreading lots of doom and gloom

It’s a sin to share possessions
Empathy is out of date
Employment truly matters
It’s the thing we must create
Chorus
When I read about the Luddites
They don’t seem so bad to me
With our planet being ruined
By our liberal democracy

Competition is a menace
Silicone a hangman’s rope
Yet when I look at the Amish
I see tradition, peace and hope

3
Never mind about the robots
It’s a competition thing
To prove that you are worthy
You must praise the money king

Competition is the method
By which you can be the best
Even though the robots coming
Might replace you with the rest

4
In pursuit of full employment
God’s creation takes a hit
And social justice suffers
When it tries to do its bit

Only competition matters
And with robots on the way
It is looking like our species
May well soon have had its day
Chorus
When I read about the Luddites
They don’t seem so bad to me
With our planet being ruined
By our liberal democracy

Competition is a menace
Silicone a hangman’s rope
Yet when I look at the Amish
I see tradition, peace and hope

Boeing's Max 8 (The Coffin Maker) (83)

Boeing’s Max 8 (The Coffin Maker)

It’s quite frugal on the fuel
Boeing’s plane, the Max 8
Renamed the “coffin maker”
After crashing twice of late

With its complicated software
And its balance all awry
Time for it be dismantled
With a tear from either eye

Chorus
Can we disregard “persuasion”
Will an upgrade do the trick?
Some admit to cutting corners
And consequently feeling sick

When a plane is prone to stalling
And its sensors can’t be trusted
Then a better plane is needed
Than a turkey that is busted
We need a plane without software to fix a fault
Plus a patch for when the pilot feels distraught.

2
It relies a lot on sensors
And software that is hidden
In the worst case scenario
Pilot input is forbidden

When the sensors lose position
Then the software serves a lie
And the people smell a coffin
That is flying in the sky

Chorus

Mad Max is entertaining
After buying snacks to eat
The violence cannot hurt you
From the safety of your seat

But the Max 8 is for flying
Hidden software helps it out
With input from two sensors
(Clever stuff without a doubt)
Save for two planes that became metallic coffins
To be ignored by Boeing’s latest software boffins.

3

Boeing knew the Max 8
Was in fact a bitch to fly
It required a programmer
To stop it stalling in the sky

So software was provided
And some sensors hid away
And hey presto, the illusion
That this plane is all okay

Chorus
Can we disregard “persuasion”
Will an upgrade do the trick?
Some admit to cutting corners
And consequently feeling sick

When a plane is prone to stalling
And its sensors can’t be trusted
Then a better plane is needed
Than a turkey that is busted
We need a plane without software to fix a fault
Plus a patch for when the pilot feels distraught.

4
Boeing made heaps money
With new orders flooding in
No mention of the software
Like it was a rubbish bin

Many pilots have been speaking
Of their problems with this plane
Can we trust its software update
Not to fall from grace again?

Chorus

Mad Max is entertaining
After buying snacks to eat
The violence cannot hurt you
From the safety of your seat

But the Max 8 is for flying
Hidden software helps it out
With input from two sensors
(Clever stuff without a doubt)
Save for two planes that became metallic coffins
To be ignored by Boeing’s latest software boffins.
