A Question of Conscience (74)

A Question of Conscience (74)
1
The power to make money
Gives us comfort I believe
What a pity that so many
Have to borrow and to thieve

There is endless competition
For those plotting to succeed
So what kind of people are we
If we fail to deal with greed?
2
How many years of study
On route for a good degree
Leading to okay employment
And not abject poverty

Let me now sidestep the married
That have many mouths to feed
So what kind of people are we
If we fail to deal with greed?
Chorus
I am weary of excuses
That the greedy often make
As they dish out to the needy
A few crumbs and not the cake

So how about it, rich and wealthy
Why be mean for heaven’s sake?
It’s as if you want the poorest
To be dumped into a lake
3
We all need a little money
Do we ‘sell-out’ to get there?
So our landlord will be genial
And nothing like a grizzly bear

If by now we have some children
Love and care is what they need
So what kind of people are we
If we fail to deal with greed?
4
Looking far into the future
Maybe robots will hold sway
With contempt for Mr Luddite
Who might start a small foray

I suppose the usual wealthy
Will grow richer, yes indeed
As they deal with Mr Luddite
And encourage human greed
Chorus
I am weary of excuses
That the greedy often make
As they dish out to the needy
A few crumbs and not the cake

So how about it, rich and wealthy
Why be mean for heaven’s sake?
It’s as if you want the poorest
To be dumped into a lake

The End
