The Day of the Dragon (9)

The Day of the Dragon

1
Everytime I see a dragon
I just don’t know what to do
As this beast is much too scary
For some sanctuary or local zoo
And although some folk pursue them
With weapons designed for war
I would prefer to be a hippie
Than a redneck carnivore

Chorus
A dragon is more deadly
Than any maniac or infidel
On the day that you meet one
Drop everything and run like hell
Never try to fight a dragon
For they have a fiery tongue
And should one ever catch you
They will cremate you just for fun
2
When I bump into a dragon
Then I run or else play dead
On the basis it will ignore me
For some other fool instead
I’m adverse to hero worship
That was common in the past
When medals were important
And death came to many fast
Chorus
A dragon is more deadly
Than any maniac or infidel
On the day that you meet one
Drop everything and run like hell
Never try to fight a dragon
For they have a fiery tongue
And should one ever catch you
They will cremate you just for fun
3
I have had enough of dragons
Hiding deep amongst the trees
In the age of breeding monsters
There are none as bad as these
With their wings simply amazing
As they travel through the skies
And I run like crazy to escape
Or else I hide beneath my cape
So not to be crushed like a grape
Or else become the meat found in pies

Chorus
A dragon is more deadly
Than any maniac or infidel
On the day that you meet one
Drop everything and run like hell
Never try to fight a dragon
For they have a fiery tongue
And should one ever catch you
They will cremate you just for fun

Some people say I’m lazy
Not to mention a little crazy
Especially one particular lady
That I daren’t mention by name
But when you see a dragon in action
They are certainly not an abstraction
With enough napalm to set in flames
Any villages opposed to their games
Not to mention the keeper of sheep
And young children fearful to sleep
Or their mother preparing to weep
For the grain the dragon will reap
As a result of its territorial claims
The fruits as per usual of might
With a dragon a challenge to fight
Unless you have destiny on your side
And you can’t find a good place to hide
And you are a much braver man than me
That finds it impossible to let this monster be

Good luck

The End

  1. Yesterday the previous version was a rush job. Well having spent another couple of hours editing, it is only expected that I should rewrite some of the lines. Fundamentally the song/poem remains the same but in detail well there are some differences naturally. This is the way that I work. Even now I am rushing to present this edited version so it remains a possibility that I will still change the odd line. Yet I feel happy with what I present here. I kind of like what I have written. I hope you do too!

  3. Well I have just completed another edit of this weird song/poem. Nothing too major; just a few lines here and there where I felt it needed a little more "sand papering" to achieve the desired effect. I will now try to avoid shaped songs/poems for a while as this certainly adds to the time required to get them close to being right. Mind you, I'm inclined to think nothing can be made perfect in the human dimension. To understand this you need to familiar yourself with Plato's Theory of Forms. This to me is the philosophy that defines the futility of scientific ambition. We are inherently a flawed and damaged species subject to the constraints of time, decay and imperfection. So the more technologically proficient we become the more dangerous we become. Einstein proved this with his act of genius that led to the splitting of the atom. Hiroshima and Nagasaki along with the black cloud we have lived under ever since. Even when we get the science right well the application inevitably lets us down for the simple reason that as a flawed and vulnerable species we know of no other way. It is written into our DNA. The only safe answer to this is to emulate the way of life of the Amish. Tradition, simplicity, modesty, community, cooperation, faith in a higher dimension and domain, the mechanisms and protocols of restraint and a way to rein in the forces of evil that would prefer to lead us in the direction of greater destruction. We need to tame the dragon and Plato has given us the philosophy by which this may be achieved.

  4. Oh dear, another edit. Well I hope to leave this song/poem alone from this point on as I feel it is pretty close to the mark now. As I explained previously, perfection is not possible, so the aim is to get close enough to the mark that the imperfections are as valid as the beauty spots on a beautiful model! When I say this, I fear for inviting comparisons to one of my favourite poets, William Topaz McGonagall whose masterpiece is of course, "The Tay Bridge Disaster." To write that badly is truly an art worthy of respect. Unfortunately there is a mighty gulf between McGonagall and the talents of say Keats, Eliot or Blake. Naturally the vast majority fall into this gulf from which they cannot ever hope to escape. I do believe it is called anonymity. Welcome to my world!
